Ever had a question about sex that you always wanted to know the answer to but never had the chance to find out? This presentation gives students that chance. In this interactive presentation, attendees anonymously write questions about sexual health and related issues on note cards and submit them to the presenter (AKA the Love Guru), who will provide accurate answers to the entire group. This presentation was formerly called “Sex in the Dark.”

This highly interactive educational session comes in the form of games of Bingo – except with a twist: The numbers on the Bingo cards are replaced with definitions of sexual terminology. The presenter calls out the sexual terminology and the attendees mark their cards if they have (or think they have) the correct definition for that word. Attendees who get Bingo win prizes. To add to the fun, the markers for the Bingo cards are none other than condoms!

It is estimated that 1 in 4 sexually active Americans have (or have had) HPV (Human Papilloma Virus), making it the most common Sexually Transmitted Infection in the U.S. However, many college students have a limited understanding of this virus, which can (depending on the strain) cause genital warts and cervical cancer in women. This presentation discusses HPV and ways to prevent contracting the virus.

This highly interactive presentation uses the Wellness Center’s famous “clickers,” through which attendees can anonymously submit their answers to questions projected on a screen. Attendees can then see – in real time – how they and the other attendees responded as a group. The correct answers, along with detailed explanations, are then provided by the presenter. This is a great way for attendees to anonymously test their knowledge on a wide variety of sexual health topics.
As a result of this training, attendees will:
Utilizing a variety of activities and exercises, this presentation teaches about stress and strategies to deal with stress in healthy ways.

There are times in our lives where we may be in a position to help someone in crisis. This presentation discusses suicide and suicide-related behaviors as they pertain to college students. Additionally, this presentation: (1) teaches simple yet effective steps in helping a friend or acquaintance who is in crisis, and (2) identifies resources (both on and off-campus) to which a friend or acquaintance can be directed for professional assistance.

Developed by COMPASS – Northwest’s Peer Education group, this presentation defines self-injury (such as cutting, branding, hair pulling, etc.), describes the causes and effects of self-injurious behavior on college students, and debunks myths about self-injury. Incorporated into this presentation are the Wellness Center’s “clickers,” through which attendees can anonymously submit their answers to questions projected on a screen and can then see – in real time – how they and the other attendees responded as a group to questions concerning self-injury.

It is estimated that 1 in 4 women experience a sexual assault of some type during college, with many of these assaults going unreported. If not dealt with, victims of sexual assault can experience harmful consequences in both the short and long-term. This presentation discusses a variety of issues pertaining to sexual assault, including “date rape” drugs. Additionally, prevention, response to sexual assault, and campus resources are addressed.

Whether or not a student chooses to drink, alcohol use can impact his or her life in a variety of ways. This presentation covers basic (and sometimes misunderstood) facts about alcohol use and the negative consequences that could occur should a student choose to use alcohol.
As a result of this presentation, attendees will:
Despite the fact that many Northwest students either do not use alcohol or drink moderately, there is often a perception that “everyone is doing it.” Through the use of the Wellness Center’s “clickers,” by which attendees can anonymously submit their answers to questions projected on a screen and then see – in real time – how they and the other attendees responded as a group, this presentation demonstrates how much drinking really takes place on-campus. Showing students that their perceptions of others’ drinking are often inaccurate can lead to more moderate and/or responsible alcohol use. This presentation also addresses some basic facts about alcohol use and responsible vs. irresponsible drinking practices.
As a result of this presentation, attendees will:
Financial decisions made during college (such as accruing credit card debt, engaging in practices that may lead to identity theft, etc.) can lead to significant amounts of stress and can have lasting impacts far beyond college. To help students make more informed financial decisions and reduce stress associated with finances, this presentation gives an overview of (1) credit card debt, (2) credit scores, and (3) identity theft. Interactive PowerPoint slides, discussion, and Q&A make this an exciting, interactive, and informative session.

The University Wellness Center offers a wide range of services that benefit Northwest students in many ways. In order to create a greater understanding of Wellness Center services, we can schedule tours of our facility in the evenings after we close, where attendees can explore our facility and learn about the Wellness Center’s philosophy of care and the many services that we provide that help students achieve optimal wellness while at Northwest. Our hope is that, with this better understanding, students will more fully take advantage of all that we offer and be more comfortable when they arrive at the Wellness Center.
