Measles, Mumps and Rubella Vaccination (MMR)

The most effective strategy for protecting college students from mumps is to ensure that all students have received two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine or can provide other evidence of immunity.

Because Northwest Missouri State University feels this is crucial to the health of our students, the University Wellness Center requires documentation from each student showing that he or she has had two doses of the MMR vaccine.

Students who fail to provide such documentation to the Wellness Center will not be allowed to register for the next semester.

If you have questions or need to be vaccinated, call the University Wellness Center at (660) 562-1348.

The American College Health Association (www.acha.org) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (www.cdc.gov) recommend that undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty members, health-care workers and other college employees, receive two doses of the MMR vaccine or provide other evidence of mumps immunity.

College students living in close proximity to one another in residence halls are much more susceptible to communicable disease. This is an especially important issue right now due to the recent outbreak of mumps across the Midwest.

The effectiveness of the MMR vaccine against mumps is approximately 80% after one dose and approximately 90% after two doses. Because the vaccine is not 100% effective, some cases can occur in vaccinated persons.
