Between classes, work and day-to-day routines, exercise and healthy eating sometimes falls to the bottom of the to-do list. The Northwest Missouri State University Wellness Center is hoping to curb that trend, however, with help from a Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) grant.
The Heartland Foundation, North Kansas City Hospital and Heartland Health contributed funding for the grant, which provides money to improve the health and wellness of the Northwest campus and community. When selecting grant recipients, the contributors look for innovative ideas that will increase the overall health of the people in northwest Missouri.
Northwest Wellness Services received the funding for a proposal known as the Student Health Initiative For Transformation, or SHIFT Project. The HEAL grant will help Wellness Services create an interactive and comprehensive website for students and the community to access for health and wellness tips.
“Our goal is to have a one-stop-shop for all things health and wellness,” Jennifer Kennymore, a health educator in Wellness Services, said. “The website will be a place where people can learn about wellness as well as assess their wellness and work on their personal wellness.”
The website will include videos and other interactive tools that demonstrate healthy lifestyle choices and promote the six dimensions of wellness: physical, emotional, spiritual, social, intellectual and occupational.
Wellness Services also plans to promote Northwest’s Good4U dining options as well as the campus’s recreational and fitness facilities.
“I think this grant will have a positive effect on the Northwest community because it will help people think about their health and wellness and how their choices and actions can truly impact their lives,” Kennymore said. “I hope it opens many people’s eyes to the fact that it is up to them to live healthy and be active.”
