Dr. Wilmes received his medical training at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Before coming to Northwest, he was in private practice in the Columbia area. He received his undergraduate degree from Northwest, and has been the Medical Director since 1990. Dr. Wilmes is on the medical staff at St. Francis Hospital and Health Services, serves on the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Health, the Missouri Council for Activity and Nutrition, the Missouri Higher Education Subcommittee for Campus Safety and Security, and is a member of the Ethics committees for both Heartland Hospital in St. Joseph and St. Francis Hospital in Maryville. In addition to providing outpatient care, Dr. Wilmes works closely with Athletic Training as one of the team physicians providing medical coverage for Northwest athletic teams. Professional affiliations include the American College Health Association (from which he has been recognized as a Fellow for his contributions and leadership in the field of college health), Central College Health Association, American Academy of Family Practice, American College of Sports Medicine, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine, American College Personnel Association, National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, as well as work on various sub-committees of these organizations.

Dr. Wilmes believes strongly in prevention and wellness, and feels that the whole person, not just the disease or illness, should be considered when treating or preventing illness. He is an avid reader, runner, cyclist and amateur naturalist. His wife, Robin, is a speech therapist. They have four children, all of whom attended Northwest for at least part of their college careers.
