Senior sprinter E.J. Falkner and junior high jumper Halley Carlson have been named the Northwest Male and Female Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the period ended Feb. 10. Both provisionally qualified for NCAA indoor nationals last week while competing at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.

Falkner qualified in two events -- the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes. He ran 6.85 in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash and 22.07 in the 200-meter dash to become the first member of the Northwest men’s indoor track and field team to qualify for the championships next month.

Falkner also finished second in the 200-meter dash and ran the third-fastest time in the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash. He already has four indoor All-America titles in his career.

Carlson became the first qualifier on the women’s side after a leap of 5 feet, 6 inches in the high jump. It was a personal-best for Carlson, who placed third in the event. It also ties her for fifth on Northwest’s all-time performer list.
