Northwest senior football player Joel Osborn and sophomore volleyball player Paige Spangenberg have been named Northwest Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ended Oct. 19.

Osborn passed for 212 yards and threw three touchdowns to lead Northwest to a 56-7 win against Fort Hays State in the annual homecoming contest at Bearcat Stadium.

Osborn led the Bearcats to the end zone on all five possessions he played. His final drive ended with a 17-yard touchdown strike to high school teammate Greg Applegate, which gave Northwest a 35-0 lead.

Osborn became the ninth quarterback in program history to pass for more than 4,000 yards. He’s thrown 30 touchdowns in his Northwest career, which ranks eighth all-time.

Spangenberg averaged 7.29 digs per set in two matches last week. She posted 29 digs in a win against Missouri Western Wednesday and 22 in a loss to 12th-ranked Truman Friday. She ended the week 15 digs shy of 1,000 for her career.

The 22 digs against Truman tied for the third-best performance in Bearcat Arena for three-set matches. It was the most digs allowed by Truman this season.

Spangenberg is on pace to set school records for career digs per set with 4.8 (current record is 3.67) and season digs per set with 4.9 (she set the record last year at 4.74).
