University portal, myNorthwest, to launch May 12

The Office of Information Systems has scheduled the official launch of the new myNorthwest Web portal for May 12.

Under development for more than a year, the portal will provide users with an easy, one-step sign-in for such services as e-mail and CatPAWS, as well as the ability to create user groups and conduct other social networking and information-sharing activities.

To preview MyNorthwest, go to http://my.nwmissouri.edu. Students, faculty and staff can log on using their current user name (S number for students) and password. Users who leave the portal open on their computers, but who are inactive for an extended period, can avoid delays by logging out then logging back in.

MyNorthwest will work on all platforms and is accessible to users both on and off campus.

Designed and deployed using SunGuard’s Luminus Platform software, myNorthwest will function as an on-line resource for the entire University community. It is configured to provide users with message boards, online groups, chat rooms, photo albums, targeted messages and many other features.

The service is similar to popular commercial portals, such as My Yahoo, and allows users to customize their portal page based on personal preferences. Logging on to myNorthwest provides one-click access to e-mail, electronic bill-paying, on-line library resources, campus employment opportunities and other Web-based services.

One of the chief advantages of the portal will be its ability to deliver customized information to selected groups of users. This message board-like function will provide students and others with quick and convenient access to grades, course schedules, registration requirements and billing information.

Among other features, a typical personalized page might include scrollable menus and buttons for news and announcements, search engines, personal bookmarks, local weather, library services, user groups, account information and Bearcat sports updates.
