Celebration of Quality spotlights best student work

Northwest’s annual Celebration of Quality, an interdisciplinary symposium for undergraduate and graduate students, will take place from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, on the third floor of the J.W. Jones Student Union.

The Celebration of Quality is sponsored by Sigma Pi Sigma, the honors society for President’s Scholars. It is a chance for students to showcase their best work at Northwest in a professional setting. The event will include projects, papers, creative writing, artwork and performances from 79 students.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for students to share and be recognized for the great work they are doing. The event should instill pride across the community that our students are such bright and capable thinkers, writers and performers,” said Robin Gallaher, instructor of English.

Gallaher served as one of the event’s faculty organizers along with Dr. John Fisher, assistant professor of communication, theatre and languages, and Dr. John Gallaher, assistant professor of English.

Provost Kichoon Yang will make opening remarks at 3 p.m., which will be followed by 14 student presentation sessions beginning at 3:30 p.m. There will be a dinner for participants at 6 p.m., during which Dr. Carla Edwards of the Department of Psychology, Sociology and Counseling will speak on the psychology of leadership.

During the opening ceremonies, student Peggy Loutzenhiser will perform “Marimba Spiritual.” Written in the early 1980’s for Keiko Abe, one of the world’s leading marimba players, this work is a musical reflection on the widespread famine that struck Africa during that time.

Students taking part in the annual seminar submitted an application and were required to have their work sponsored by a Northwest professor.
