Herstory panel names Indispensible Women honorees
The Women’s Herstory Month committee will host its second-annual Indispensable Women of Northwest recognition reception at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 20, in the J.W. Jones Student Union Living Room.
This year’s honorees are:
- Dr. Merry McDonald, professor of computer science and information systems. Now in her 36th year at Northwest, McDonald advises more than 80 graduate students in the very successful applied computer science program.
- Carolyn Johnson, information librarian and assistant professor of library science. Johnson was key in establishing the Undergraduate Library Research Awards at Northwest. She has also served as co-coordinator of the “Brick and Click Libraries Symposium” since its inception in 2001.
- Susan Altizer, Northwest alumna (’73). Altizer has taught family and consumer sciences and health for 35 years, the last 20 of them in Shenandoah, Iowa, where she has been honored with the Shenandoah Education Association Teacher of the Year Award. Noted for her insistence on classroom excellence, Altizer regularly encourages students to attend Northwest after graduating from high school.
- Joan Schneider, director of career services. Schneider’s office has helped thousands of students explore internship and career opportunities while preparing for life after college. Programs implemented under her leadership include Mock Interview Day, Exploring Majors and numerous workshops.
- Rita Hanks, Northwest Board of Regents. A regent since 1999, Hanks served as the governing body’s first woman president. She gives generously of her time and talent to Northwest and serves as an extremely effective role model for students, especially young women pursuing professional careers.
- Julie Volner, Custodial Services. Volner is notable for the pleasant and conscientious way in which she goes about her many duties. She is known as both a friend and role model to her co-workers and as a valuable member of the Northwest community.
- Beverly Schenkel, dean of enrollment management. As the University’s top administrator for enrollment and recruitment, Schenkel has served as the guiding hand behind Northwest’s many successes in both admissions and retention. She has greatly strengthened the University’s use of the Internet as a recruiting tool and recently implemented the Illinois Recruitment Campaign.
Nominated by the University community, Indispensable Women of Northwest honorees must have served the University for at least five years. Faculty, staff, alumni and non-employee friends of Northwest are all eligible.
Last year’s honorees were first Lady Aleta Hubbard and Laura Widmer, assistant professor of mass communication and award-winning faculty advisor to “The Northwest Missourian” student newspaper and “Tower” yearbook.
