On Oct. 31, 2007, two Northwest students dressed in costumes meant to depict former NFL quarterback Michael Vick and the described shooter who allegedly fired shots on campus Homecoming night. The incidents occurred at two separate Halloween parties held off campus.
The students are members of Northwest Greek-letter organizations, both of which have been reprimanded for disregarding Interfraternity Council (IFC) and local chapter codes of conduct.
On Monday, Dec. 10, the fraternities to which the men belong, Phi Sigma Kappa and Delta Chi, were brought before Northwest’s IFC Judicial Board, which considered the actions of both students and implemented sanctions.
Sanctions will require the two fraternity chapters to bring a multicultural speaker to Northwest at the conclusion of next fall’s recruitment period; complete 200 hours of community service; conduct internal educational sessions for members; and issue written apologies to the IFC, Panhellenic Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, the Northwest Student Senate and Northwest President Dean L. Hubbard.
The national organizations to which the chapters belong have been contacted and encouraged to investigate in order to determine if any violations of national policy took place. This process could result in further sanctions.
Both students have expressed remorse and have issued apologies to members of the University community whom they offended.
The entire Northwest Greek-letter community wishes to issue its own apology for the actions of its members. All of the University’s fraternities and sororities are founded on similar principles of scholarship, service, philanthropy, member development and brotherhood/sisterhood. Such values form the core of everything that Northwest Greeks strive to accomplish.
It is imperative that these negative actions ultimately result in a positive learning experience for our members. IFC, Panhellenic Council and National Pan-Hellenic Council will continue to stress their shared fundamental principles in an effort to ensure that similar incidents do not happen again.
