Domestic violence awareness events set for October

The Lighthouse Project, a federally funded program charged with fighting relationship violence on campus and throughout the Maryville community, has partnered with Peer Education and the University Wellness Center to sponsor two Domestic Violence Awareness Month activities Oct. 24-31.

The purpose of the events is to raise awareness about domestic violence while highlighting education and prevention programs and providing resource information to victims and family members.

Activities include:

In addition to informational materials, table staffers will hand out purple ribbons symbolizing solidarity with the fight against relationship violence. Also available will be information in connection with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Founded in Cape Cod, Mass., in 1990, the Clothesline Project (www.clotheslineproject.org) takes the form of displays of shirts emblazoned with messages and illustrations designed by women survivors of violence and their loved ones.

The shirts are meant to increase awareness while encouraging women to break the silence that often surrounds an abusive relationship.
