Spring has been slow in coming this year, but about 200 members of the Northwest and Maryville communities took advantage of a break in the weather Friday, April 18, to participate in a tree planting ceremony symbolizing the campus' recovery from a devastating December ice storm.
About 30 trees were planted by groups and individuals during the event, and more than 50 have been planted since for a total exceeding the number of trees destroyed by the storm (79). Tree plantings will continue through the spring and resume in the fall.
Financial support for tree replacement has come from campus groups, organizations, offices and departments who responded to President Dean L. Hubbard's call to make "this campus and this arboretum better than it ever was.”
Faculty, staff, students, alumni and other friends of the University who wish to continue supporting restoration of the Northwest campus, which is designated as the Missouri Arboretum, can get details online at www.nwmissouri.edu/alumni/tree.htm.
