Festival concert to feature
sax virtuoso Pete Christlieb

   Northwest’s Department of Music and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia will host the annual Northwest Jazz Festival Saturday, March 8.
   Highlights include a noon performance by the Northwest Jazz Ensemble in Charles Johnson Theater and a 5 p.m. concert in the Performing Arts Center by the Boulevard Big Band of Kansas City featuring well-known tenor saxophonist Pete Christlieb. Both shows have free admission. 
   A veteran session player whose saxophone is frequently heard on television and motion picture soundtracks, Christlieb has played under such legendary leaders as Louis Bellson and Count Basie and was a featured soloist on Natalie Cole’s “Unforgettable.” MOREharlem small

Harlem Gospel Choir celebrates historic sound of black church

   The renowned Harlem Gospel Choir will bring this year's Black Achievement Month emphasis to a close at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 9, in the Performing Arts Center's Mary Linn Auditorium.
   Admission is free for Northwest students, faculty and staff. Tickets for the general public cost $5 and are available through the Student Services Center on the first floor of the Administration Building, or call 660.562.1212.
   Through its brilliant singing and dynamic performances, the choir creates a better understanding of African-American culture and the inspirational music called gospel.

  Dr. Jim Redd, former athletics director at Northwest, was recently inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. Friends, classmates, colleagues and supporters are invited to congratulate Redd personally during a come-and-go reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, at the Northwest Kansas City Center in Liberty.
