Dr. David Easterla
The Central States Archaeological Journal (July 2009; Vol. 56, No. 3) recently published two articles by Dr. David Easterla, distinguished university professor of biology.
“A Red Flare-bitted Celt from Northeastern Kansas” describes a rare type of red hardstone celt, or ax, dating from the Woodland Period (1000 BCE to 1000 CE), which was found in Brown County in extreme northeastern Kansas sometime between the 1930s and 1950s and later acquired by the author.
The second article, “A Grizzly Bear Claw from a Native American Campsite in South Central Iowa,” describes the claw, which was found in 2002, as a trade item discovered in a plowed field near the Chariton River in Lucas County. Easterla notes that the claw has a small hole drilled near the base and was probably worn as part of a necklace.
