Robert Frizzell

Director of Libraries Robert Frizzell, whose scholarly interests include early German settlement in Missouri, will give a presentation at the Kansas City Public Library's central branch at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, as part of the library's Missouri Valley Speakers Series.

Frizzell's talk is titled, "A Little-Known Civil War Massacre: 'Bloody Bill' Anderson Among the Lafayette County Germans."

Based on a section in Frizzell's book, "Independent Immigrants: A Settlement of Hanoverian Germans in Western Missouri," the presentation will describe how the community of Concordia became the target of a Confederate guerilla band led by the notorious Anderson during the 1860s.

"Independent Immigrants" won a Governor's Book Award from the Missouri Humanities Council in 2008. The Central Library is located at 14 W. 10th Street in Kansas City.
