Dr. David Easterla
Two papers by Dr. David Easterla, distinguished university professor of biology, have been published in scientific periodicals.
“North American Birds” (Vol. 62, No. 2, 2008), the quarterly journal of the American Birding Association, published “A Specimen of Caribbean Cave Swallow (Petrochelidon fulva cf. fulva) from Missouri.”
The paper describes a specimen of an adult female cave swallow collected in Maryville and now documented as the first confirmed record for Missouri and one of only a few specimens of a Caribbean/Floridian bird found in North America north of Florida.
Easterla’s second paper, “A Butchered Extinct Bison (Bison antiquus) by Paleo-Man in Nodaway County, Missouri,” appeared in the “Central States Archaeological Journal” (July 2008, Vol. 55, No. 3).
The article describes the find in 2003 of a large, semi-mineralized atlas (the topmost vertebra of the neck) of an adult animal bearing chop marks of apparently human origin. Easterla believes the find, which occurred on the Platte River near Ravenwood, is the first documentation in Missouri of a Bison antiquus, extinct for about 10,000 years, being butchered by a paleolithic human.
