Dr. Stephen Town, professor of music, will perform Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Five Mystical Songs” with the San Antonio (Texas) Choral Society on Sunday, Oct. 12.
Town is a recipient of the prestigious Ralph Vaughan Williams Fellowship given annually by the Carthusian Trust of the United Kingdom to a North American musicologist. As a Vaughan Williams Fellow, Town was given the opportunity to study the composer’s autograph manuscripts at the British Library while residing at Charterhouse, the school Vaughan Williams attended as a boy.
Town’s monograph on Vaughan Williams’ “Sea Symphony” appears in “Vaughan Williams Essays” (Cambridge University Press). He has also written papers on other works by the composer, including “Flos Campi,” “An Oxford Elegy” and “Five Mystical Songs.”
