Robert Frizzell

Robert Frizzell, director of libraries, recently spoke at the German Culture Center at the University of Missouri-St. Louis about his new book, "Independent Immigrants: A Settlement of Hanoverian Germans in Western Missouri" (University of Missouri Press).

Covering the period between 1838 and the early 1890s, "Independent Immigrants" describes the exodus of a large group of farm families to Lafayette County, Mo., from what is now the north German state of Lower Saxony.

The community centered around the town of Concordia -- located near Frizzell's boyhood home -- and eventually grew to include settlements in the adjoining counties of Saline, Pettis and Johnson.
