Students, employers gather for Career Day

Representatives from about 60 companies, institutions and government agencies will visit Northwest Wednesday, Oct. 14, during fall Career Day.

Employers and recruiters will be on hand to speak with potential job, internship and graduate school applicants from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Bearcat Arena.

In order to help students with their planning, Career Services has posted the list of participating employers at www.nwmissouri.edu/careerserv/events/CareerDay_Fall.htm.

Employer names are linked to company Web sites, so students can research firms and institutions for whom they might want to work. The page also includes a link to the 18-minute video, “How to Attend Career Day.”

About 500 students typically participate in Career Day at Northwest, and some will be called back on Thursday, Oct. 15, for Next Day Interviews, when recruiters conduct interviews with “pre-selected” applicants and students who have made a particularly good first impression.

Joan Schneider, director of Career Services, said research shows that career fairs are the preferred way employers recruit recent college graduates, and all University students preparing to enter the job market are urged to attend.

Those participating should wear appropriate business attire and come prepared with several copies of a letter-perfect resume. At a minimum, prospective employers will want to know the major and primary career goals of students who talk to them.

The event also is a good opportunity for freshmen and sophomores to scout for internship opportunities since a growing number of employers rely on internships to screen for potential employees.
