Paper based on research from Squaw Creek is published

A paper based on research from Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge has been published in The Wilson Journal of Ornithology (Vol. 121, No. 3, 2009).

The paper, “Spatial Ecology of Breeding Least Bitterns in Northwest Missouri,” was co-authored by Amanda Griffin, a Northwest graduate student in the wildlife ecology and conservation program; Dr. David Easterla, distinguished university professor of biology; Francis Durbian, wildlife researcher at Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge at the time of the field research; and Ronald Bell, manager of Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge. In addition, Brian Homas, a graduate student, and four Northwest students completing wildlife internships, Justin Hamilton, Chris Owen, Jeremy Swope and Erin Zorn, helped with this project.

The research project examined the spatial ecology of breeding Least Bitterns, an uncommon secretive marsh bird, on Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge, located five miles south of Mound City in Holt County, using radiotelemetry. The study demonstrated that Least Bitterns are capable of using much larger home ranges than previously observed.
