Paul Wagner

Paul Wagner

The economic climate in the state of Missouri and how it impacts higher education will be the topic of discussion next week as Paul Wagner, deputy commissioner of the Missouri Department of Higher Education, visits Northwest.

Wagner will address the University community at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, in the Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building’s Charles Johnson Theater. His 30-minute presentation, “The Missouri Budget and Implications for Higher Education,” will be followed by a 30-minute question-and-answer session. His presentation is open to the public.

“Mr. Wagner’s presentation will be of value to anyone who is interested in the challenges Northwest, and higher education institutions in the state of Missouri, might be facing in the coming two to three years,” said Dan Edmonds, controller and interim vice president for finance and operations. “His revenue projections are based on factual data, and the outlook is not good.”

During his presentation, Wagner will give an overview of Missouri’s state budget and discuss the nature of the federal stimulus package, the state’s current balance sheet, the outlook for higher education budgets and challenges for Northwest.

Wagner is a graduate of Truman State University and Baylor University. He completed an internship with the U.S. Supreme Court in the administrative office of Chief Justice William Rehnquist. Wagner returned to Missouri as the legislative liaison and budget analyst at the Missouri Department of Higher Education for five years. He joined the Missouri Senate in 2001 as its education policy and budget analyst and returned to the MDHE in 2007 as deputy commissioner.
