The Northwest chapter of the Phi Mu sorority will host a breast cancer awareness event this week at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, in the Boardroom of the J.W. Jones Student Union. The
The sorority is organizing the gathering in conjunction with St. Francis Hospital and Health Services and the University Wellness Center. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted by Phi Mu on behalf of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Speakers will include Northwest student Aubrey Swanson, Phi Mu member Sara Jobe and a representative from the University Wellness Center. St. Francis Hospital staff will hand out breast cancer awareness materials.
The Northwest Phi Mu chapter is a part of the national Phi Mu sorority, which was founded in 1852 at Wesleyan College in Georgia. The organization boasts more than 150,000 collegiate and alumnae members in 120 collegiate and 175 alumnae chapters across the United States.
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation supports scientists at leading medical centers worldwide with grants that help further breast cancer research. Foundation efforts have raised more than $215 million in the fight against breast cancer, but BCRF President Myra Biblowit says much work remains.
“We have come very far but still have a lot to do before we reach our goal,” Biblowit said. “To conquer this disease in our lifetime we have to increase the breadth and depth of our support.”
