KXCV/KRNW receives Public Broadcasting grants
KXCV/KRNW, the 100,000-watt FM public radio voice of Northwest Missouri State University, was recently awarded just under $32,000 by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
The funding represents a Rural Efficiency Grant and Rural Local Service Grant available to public radio stations that demonstrate a commitment to outstanding programming in a high-efficiency, cost-savings environment as well as exceptional community service.
Services associated with the Rural Efficiency Grant include:
- An Audio Reader Program that transmits spoken versions of printed matter on a 24-hour basis to listeners with visual impairments throughout the KXCV/KRNW coverage area. The program is provided in partnership with the District 26 Lions Club.
- The Enco Digital Auto Delivery System.
- The Public Interactive Enhanced Web Site Management System.
- News sharing with commercial stations in the region.
- Becoming the first Public Radio station in the region to offer digital broadcasting and CD-quality sound to listeners equipped with digital receivers.
- Tower rental agreements with two paging companies, thus expanding needed telecommunications services across a predominantly rural listening area.
Services associated with the Rural Local Service Grant include:
- Acting as the sole Public Radio source for much of northwest and north central Missouri as well as parts of southern Iowa, northeast Kansas and southeast Nebraska.
- A news-intensive format that includes National Public Radio magazine shows and newscasts along with local and regional news programs and features.
- Enhanced news coverage over 32 counties through the production of 19 local and regional newscasts each day, plus newly established on-location broadcasts covering events and activities in rural communities.
- A demonstrated commitment to public service through severe weather reportage and the provision of technical communications support to local public safety agencies. KCXV/KRNW also maintains a real-time, in-house weather radar that serves as a primary information source when severe weather threatens.
KXCV (90.5 FM) and repeater station KRNW (88.9), located in Chillicothe, broadcast jazz, classical music, news, public affairs programs, variety shows and Bearcats sporting events across northern Missouri and neighboring portions of Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska. Studios for KXCV are located on the campus of Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville.
