The presidents of Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville and North Central Missouri College, a two-year institution located in Trenton, met today (Wednesday, July 30) on the NCMC campus to sign an articulation and joint enrollment agreement that will create significant new academic opportunities for students seeking to earn a baccalaureate degree.

Dr. Dean L. Hubbard of Northwest and Dr. Neil Nuttall of NCMC both expressed enthusiastic support for the document, which lays the groundwork for strengthened academic ties between the two north Missouri institutions of higher learning through a series of about a dozen proposed articulation agreements.

Among other things, the cooperative agreements, which will be phased in over approximately three years, are designed to maximize the number of NCMC credit hours that can be applied to a four-year undergraduate degree from Northwest.

Provisions include a joint admissions program that will allow students at each institution to transfer from one school to the other, alternate enrollment between the two or co-enroll in both.

Students admitted to Northwest under the joint admissions program will receive a University ID card; access to Northwest events and activities; and access to University library, athletic and computer facilities.

Terms also specify that NCMC will encourage its graduates to continue their education at Northwest. As a result, administrators predict there will be a two- to fourfold increase in the number of North Central Missouri College graduates who transfer to the University each year. About 30 former NCMC students are currently continuing their education on the Maryville campus, which has a total undergraduate population of about 5,500.

For its part, NCMC is promising technical support for Northwest degree programs so that courses can be offered online or via other distance-learning media. In addition, the college will provide space for Northwest advisement and recruiting staff along with a Regional Professional Development Center in support of University outreach initiatives.

All new degree programs arising from the agreement require approval by Missouri’s Coordinating Board for Higher Education.
