Northwest's Tower Choir will take the stage in the Performing Arts Center
on campus at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 13, for a shared concert with Kansas
high school vocal ensembles from Louisburg and Bonner Springs.

Northwest’s Tower Choir, under the direction of Dr. Stephen Town, professor of music, will perform a shared concert with vocal ensembles from two Kansas high schools at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 13, in the Performing Arts Center on the University campus. The performance is free and open to the public.

In addition to the Tower Choir, the concert will include the Louisburg High School Select Choir conducted by Jason Sickel and the Bonner Springs High School A Cappella Choir conducted by Brian White.

The program will include a variety of choral works from several periods, including compositions by Brahms, Offenbach, Haydn, Antonio Estévez and Eric Whitacre.

Other highlights will include “Elijah Rock,” an a cappella arrangement of a traditional American spiritual by Moses Hogan, and a medley of three Irving Berlin songs, “Always,” “What’ll I Do” and “Remember,” arranged by Dr. Ronald Staheli and performed by the Tower Choir.

The Louisburg High School Select Choir is an auditioned group of 38 singers that has earned superior contest ratings for three consecutive years. With an enrollment of 120 students, the LHS choral program involves almost 25 percent of the school’s 500 students in grades 9-12.

Bonner Springs High School’s choral program was established in 1925, and the school’s mixed chorus, now the A Cappella Choir, was founded in 1932. BSHS vocal ensembles embrace about 250 singers drawn from a 775-member student body, which makes the school’s choral music program one of the largest in Kansas.

An important part of Northwest musical tradition for decades, the Tower Choir was founded by Ralph Hartzell and has been under Town's leadership since 1999. Recent highlights have included an invited performance at the Washington National Cathedral during an extended East Coast tour in spring 2007.
