Morgan Spurlock, the documentary filmmaker who created “Super Size Me,” will speak on the Northwest campus at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 6, in the Performing Arts Center.

This is a make-up appearance for Spurlock, who was originally scheduled to appear at Northwest on Jan. 31 but had to cancel due to illness. The event, sponsored by the Student Activities Council, is free and open to the public.

In “Super Size Me” Spurlock sought to demonstrate the health effects of eating three times a day for a month at a McDonald's restaurant, “supersizing” his order each time he was asked to do so.

More recently, Spurlock has hosted the FX network television program “30 Days.” The show follows the lives of people who spend 30 days immersing themselves in modes of life markedly different from their normal experience while Spurlock discusses the relevant social issues involved.

The premiere segment documents how Spurlock and his fiancé lived for a month in Columbus, Ohio, earning minimum wage with no access to outside funds.

Spurlock, who grew up in West Virginia, graduated with a BFA in film from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 1993. Before making “Super Size Me,” he gained attention as a playwright, winning awards for “The Phoenix” at both the New York International Fringe Festival (1999) and the Route 66 American Playwriting Competition (2000). He also created “I Bet You Will” for MTV.

“I Bet You Will” began as a popular Internet webcast consisting of 5-minute episodes featuring ordinary people performing unusual or embarrassing stunts in exchange for money. MTV picked up the concept after the webcast scored more than a million hits in its first five days.

Spurlock is also the author of “Don't Eat This Book: Fast Food and the Supersizing of America” (G.P. Putnam's Sons).
