Northwest’s Department of Chemistry and Physics will host an evening of stargazing from 8-10 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at Bearcat Observatory, which is located at the Mozingo Outdoor Education Recreation Area east of Maryville.
Open to everyone, the free program will feature information about the night sky and assistance in locating constellations, planets and other celestial objects.
Hosted by Observatory Coordinator Chris Shelton, the evening will give participants an opportunity to view stars in a low-light pollution environment using the University’s 14-inch, research grade Celestron telescope.
Bearcat Observatory is located about six miles east of Maryville just north of Highway 136. From Maryville, turn left into the recreation area from 136 and follow the signs.
The Department of Chemistry and Physics has begun hosting observatory nights every two weeks. Due to lengthening hours of daylight, spring sessions take place from 8-10 p.m. The next session will be Saturday, March 29.
