The recently formed Northwest String Quartet will perform its debut recital at 5 p.m. Sunday, March 16, in Charles Johnson Theater, which is located on campus on the first floor of the Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building. Admission is free, and the performance is open to the public.
Formed in fall 2007, the quartet consists of graduate student Abby Howell, violin; freshman Miranda Oehler, violin; senior Meg Koenig, viola; and freshman Cassie Swoboda, cello.
Howell, who is working toward a master’s degree in music education, said all four women are members of the Northwest Orchestra and decided to organize the quartet in order to experience the musical possibilities created by a small chamber ensemble.
“We started this fall, and we’ve been rehearsing twice a week,” Howell said. “We’ve had a few gigs, but this will be our first full recital.”
The quartet is planning a varied program for its debut, which will include works by Franz Joseph Haydn and Franz Schubert along with an arrangement of “Londonderry Air,” an Irish folk melody familiar to many as “Danny Boy.”
Northwest Director of Bands Carl Kling, who also leads the Northwest Orchestra, serves as the quartet’s faculty sponsor.
