Leading K.C. designer to exhibit work at DeLuce

Graphic designer Ann Willoughby will display her work during a new Visiting Artist Series exhibit at Northwest in March.

Willoughby’s creations will be exhibited in the first-floor gallery of the Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building Monday, March 3, through Friday, March 21. The artist will show slides and discuss her work during a lecture/reception at 7 p.m. Monday, March 3, in DeLuce 244.

Founder of the Willoughby Design Group, a Kansas City-based brand innovation and identity design firm, Willoughby and her team have developed brand identity systems for many successful retails operations, including Three Dog Bakery, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Noodles & Co., SPIN! Neapolitan Pizza and Kevin Carroll. Other clients include Feng, Hallmark, Interstate Brands Corp., Playtex and Nestlé.

Willoughby, who describes her holistic approach to design as guided by utility, clarity and simplicity, has won numerous design awards, and her work has been published in books and recognized in national and international competitions for more than 25 years.

A former American Institute of Graphics Arts board member, Willoughby is a founding national board member for AIGA’s Center for Brand Experience. She co-chaired the 2004 AIGA Business & Design Conference in New York and is the first designer from the Kansas City area to be named an AIGA Fellow.

In addition to her commercial endeavors, Willoughby has taught design at the University of Kansas and the Kansas City Art Institute. As a visiting professor at KU, she was instrumental in developing a pilot program that helped graduating seniors and businesses create successful engagement models.

She currently serves on fine arts boards for Johnson County Community College and the University of Kansas.
