The Northwest Kansas City Center in Liberty will host a Peace Workshop from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, March 13.
The gathering, which will include presentations by Northwest Missouri State University faculty, is being co-sponsored by the Liberty and Maryville Rotary clubs, which, along with Northwest, are providing financial and programmatic support.
Both clubs participate in Rotary International’s World Peace Scholarships program, a graduate-level opportunity offered through seven partner universities located in the United States, Japan, France, Argentina, England and Australia. The two-year scholarship is awarded to selected candidates seeking a master’s-level degree in international studies, peace studies and conflict resolution.
About 50 people are expected to participate in the Peace Workshop, including international students from Northwest and students from the University’s Department of History, Humanities Philosophy and Political Science. Students and faculty from Liberty High School’s Liberty Academy have also been invited to attend.
Presentations will include “Just War” by Dr. Jim Eiswert, associate professor of philosophy; “Never Again? Genocide in Darfur” by Dr. Brian Hesse, assistant professor of political science; and “Historical Perspectives on Peace Making” by Dr. Janice Brandon-Falcone, professor of history.
Rotary members will make a luncheon presentation about the World Peace Scholarship and other academic opportunities offered by the service organization, which has a long tradition of supporting international efforts that promote conflict resolution, health care and nutrition, education and economic development.
Each year, Rotary chooses 70 Rotary World Peace Scholars, ten of whom study at each of the Rotary Centers for International Studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution. Eligibility requirements include a demonstrated commitment to peace and international understanding though personal activities, community service and academic and professional achievement.
Located in an office building adjoining the Liberty High School campus, the Northwest Kansas City Center is an academic facility offering degree programs and courses through Northwest Missouri State University.
