Northwest will host a public conference exploring how culture can affect crisis communications from 11:30 a.m. to 3: 30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, on the third floor of the J.W. Jones Student Union.
A pasta bar will be available at a cost of $12 for those wishing to eat lunch during the event.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Dorothy Pennington of the University of Kansas, will discuss the importance to individuals and institutions of maintaining cultural sensitivity when communicating during a crisis or its aftermath.
Pennington is a specialist on intercultural communication and African-American culture. Her many honors include the National Communication Association Distinguished Teaching Award and the Teaching Excellence Award from the University of Kansas Center for Teaching Excellence.
“In a crisis we seldom take time to consider the impact on cultures and minority groups,” said Brittany Keeshan, one of the conference’s student organizers. “This conference will raise awareness about culture and present ideas about how organizations can plan and communicate with different groups in a crisis situation.”
For more information, or to order conference tickets, e-mail Keeshan at s255670@nwmissouri.edu or telephone 660.562.1827.
The conference is being jointly sponsored by the Department of Communication, Theatre and Languages and the Intercultural and International Center.
