The Northwest Missouri State University Board of Regents voted unanimously Wednesday, Feb. 13, to award a construction contract for a new facility services maintenance building to Lee Grover Construction Co. of St. Joseph.
The winning bid of just over $1.5 million was the lowest of four submitted and is within the project budget, said Dave Duvall, associate director of environmental services.
Exterior construction is expected to begin in June and end in late November. Interior construction, which is not included in the Grover bid, will be carried out by Northwest crews and completed sometime in 2009, Duvall said.
The new facility will be located on the northwest end of campus south of the intersection of West 16th Street and College Park Drive. It will house a number of maintenance and construction shops, in particular those now located in the basement of Valk Hall, which is being renovated into classrooms and offices for the Department of History Humanities, philosophy and political science.
Duvall said the new maintenance building is the first of several proposed structures to be built on the west side over the next few years. The complex will replace obsolete or reassigned space currently housing most of the University’s support functions. These include such operations as transportation, Campus Safety, Purchasing, Environmental Services and facilities design.
