Two of the University’s student instrumental ensembles, the Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony, will perform in concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, in Charles Johnson Theater on the Northwest campus. The performance is free and open to the public.
The Symphonic Band will perform the first of the evening’s two programs under the direction of Carl Kling, director of bands, and graduate conductors Kimberly Erickson and Nicole Kizilarmut.
Selections include “Firework!” by Jan Van der Roost; “On a Southern Hymnsong” by David Holsinger, a composition based on the well-known spiritual "There is a Balm in Gilead"; “Flight of the Pegasus” by David Shaffer; and “God of Our Fathers,” a chorale/prelude by Claude T. Smith based on another hymn by George Warren with lyrics by Daniel C. Roberts.
Kling conducts the concluding Wind Symphony program, which includes “Pagan Dances,” a suite by James Barnes; “Aztec dance” from “La Fiesta Mexicana” by H. Owen Reed; “Bayou Breakdown” by Brant Karrick, which combines 19th century “fiddle tune” dance melodies from the American South with the fugal style of J.S. Bach.; and “Wedding Dance” by the noted film score composer Jacques Press and arranged for brass and winds by Herbert N. Johnston.
