The Northwest student chapter of Amnesty International and the Office of Campus Safety will present three performances of “The Vagina Monologues” this month at the Wesley Center, 549 West 4th Street, in Maryville.
Evening curtain times are 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, and Saturday, Feb. 16. There will be a matinee performance at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17.
Created by feminist playwright Eve Ensler, “The Vagina Monologues” is an episodic play that has become associated with V-Day, an annual campaign to end violence and abuse against women and girls.
Advance tickets cost $6 and will be available at a table set up in the J.W. Jones Student Union during lunch hour the week before and the week during the production. Tickets will also be sold at the door for $8. Payment may be made using cash, check or a valid Bearcat Card ID.
Northwest student and co-director Amanda Nelson called the play “humorous and moving.”
“So many generations of women have been victims (of violence and sexual assault), and I think this show can help get the word out that this is still a huge problem,” Nelson said.
Doors at the Wesley Center will open a half-hour before each performance. There will be an intermission, and refreshments will be available.
“The Vagina Monologues” contains explicit subject matter and is recommended for mature audiences. Proceeds from all three evenings, which will include a silent auction, raffle and the sale of souvenir T-shirts, will benefit the Children and Family Center of Northwest Missouri and the fight against breast cancer.
