Becky Mullins

Becky Mullins has assumed the position of university architect and sustainability coordinator.

The new cabinet-level position, created late last year by the Board of Regents, includes responsibility for both capital projects planning and environmental oversight related to energy use, recycling and facilities design.

Mullins has more than 20 years’ experience in the areas of master planning, programming and architectural design for educational facilities. She has worked with both public and private institutions with student populations ranging from 500 to 30,000 students.

No stranger to Northwest, Mullins has worked on a number of capital projects at the University over the past 12 years in her capacity as a principal with the architectural firm of Gould Evans.

A partial list of those projects, for which Mullins has overseen master planning, programming and construction, include the Garrett-Strong Science Building renovation; J.W. Jones Student Union renovation; Colden Hall renovation; the Northwest Center of Excellence; the Fire Arts Building; three major residential facilities (Tower Suites, Forest Village Apartments and the Hudson-Perrin freshman residence complex); McKemy Center; expansion of the University Wellness Center; and construction (now underway) of a studio theatre addition to the Performing Arts Center.

During her career, Mullins has also assisted institutions in securing private donations to help fund major capital projects, including the $60 million Regnier Center for Technology & Business Innovation at Johnson County Community College.

Mullins earned a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Kansas in 1984 and served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Sierra Leone. Her professional affiliations include the American Institute of Architects and the Council of Educational Facility Planners.
