Cash, who died in 2003, is one of country music’s most legendary performers. During a career spanning more than 40 years, “The Man in Black” also used his formidable stage presence and songwriting skills to create an enduring artistic legacy in a variety of genres, including folk, rock, rockabilly, blues and gospel.

He remains one of only three performers inducted into both the Rock and Roll and Country halls of fame, the other two being Elvis Presley and Hank Williams Sr.

“Ring of Fire’s” cast of 14 multi-talented performer/musicians recreates Cash’s world of heartache, loss, faith, love and redemption through 38 legendary songs, including “A Thing Called Love,” “Five Feet High and Rising,” “Daddy Sang Bass,” “Ring of Fire,” “I Walk the Line,” “I’ve Been Everywhere,” “The Man in Black” and his final hit, “Hurt.”

The musical was created by Richard Maltby Jr., the Tony Award-winning director who also brought “Ain't Misbehavin'” and “Fosse” to the Broadway stage.

Following “Ring of Fire,” two Encore/Distinguished Lecture events remain on Northwest’s performing arts spring 2008 calendar. The Parsons Dance Company will appear at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 13, and Distinguished Lecturer Barbara Martinez Jitner will speak at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 18.

Both events will take place in the Performing Arts Center’s Mary Linn Auditorium. There is no charge for Distinguished Lecture events.

Martinez Jitner is a writer, director and producer who has spent her career bringing the untold stories of Latinas to television screens and movie theaters. She served as an executive producer of the primetime PBS television series, “American Family."
