 Rally to celebrate accomplishments of '07 football team

The Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats football team invites the public to a celebration of its 2007 season on Saturday, Feb. 9, in Bearcat Arena.

There will be an autograph session from 4-5:30 p.m. A highlight film, team awards ceremony and recognition of seniors will follow. Admission is free.

The Bearcats went 12-2 in 2007 and played in the NCAA Division II championship game for the third year in a row, losing to Valdosta State 25-20.

Despite the loss, 2007 was a very successful season for the ‘Cats and brought the program its seventh MIAA title in 12 seasons. Northwest also went 9-0 in league play for the seventh time in 11 years. 

Four Bearcat players were named All-Americans this season, and 10 earned all-region honors. Head coach Mel Tjeerdsma reached the 200-win mark in the final regular season contest against Missouri Southern and was named the league’s Coach of the Year for the ninth time. 

Running back Xavier Omon and linebacker Jared Erspamer were the MIAA’s Most Valuable Offensive and Defensive Players, respectively.

In addition to excelling on the field, the Bearcats got it done in the classroom. Seventeen student-athletes were named to the Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll, and four earned Academic All-District honors.
