Regents meeting set for 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14
Northwest's Board of Regents will convene in open session at 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, in the J.W. Jones Student Union Boardroom. The
The agenda includes the following consideration items:
- Minutes from the board’s Oct. 26, 2007, meeting.
- Proposed approval of the granting of an honorary doctoral degree to Dr. Etilvia Arjona Chang, this year’s winter commencement speaker.
- Approval of degree candidates receiving diplomas at winter commencement (begins 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14).
- Consideration of a Faculty Senate proposal for new academic programs, including a bachelor of science degree in English emphasizing technical writing and online writing and publishing skills; a common core curriculum for all communication majors; a study-abroad requirement for marketing and management majors; and a learning outcomes assessment mechanism that would be integrated into junior-level assessment beginning in fall 2008.
- Review of the University audit report as of June 30, 2007.
- Proposed approval of a resolution authorizing the University to borrow money from the Northwest Foundation, Inc., to pay for renovations to Valk Hall and construction of a new studio theater for the dramatic arts.
- Proposed room and board fees for fiscal 2008-’09.
- Proposed study-abroad requirement for marketing and management majors (considered as a separate issue from item four).
- Proposed strategic enrollment management plan.
- Proposed new position for the Regional Professional Development Center; project assistant for eMints (enhancing Missouri’s Instructional Networked Teaching Strategies) to be funded through the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
In addition, the regents will hear the following reports.
- Student regent
- Student Senate
- Support Staff Council
- Faculty Senate
Following its regular session, the regents will reconvene in closed session pursuant to exemptions to the state open meetings requirement as specified in R.S.MO 610.021. Under Missouri’s open meetings or “sunshine” law, the board may take up the following types of business in closed session:
- Pending or threatened litigation (exempt from open meetings requirements pursuant to R.S.MO 610.021[1]).
- Real estate matters (exempt from open meetings requirements pursuant to R.S.MO 610.021 [2]).
- Personnel matters (exempt from open meetings requirements pursuant to R.S.MO 610.021 [3]).
Following the closed meeting, the board may, at its discretion, reconvene in open session to discuss any old business or raise new items as individual members deem appropriate.
