‘Bearcat Idol,’ movie nights to benefit student charity

Two Up ‘Til Dawn fundraising events are scheduled for December. Proceeds from the student-led charity effort benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

A “Bearcat Idol” talent contest will take place at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in Charles Johnson Theater. Pizza and soft drinks will be available for sale during the evening.

The second event consists of two movie nights at The Hangar movie theater in Maryville. Groups of up to ten moviegoers may present an Up ‘Til Dawn coupon at the box office, which will be redeemed in the form of a $2 donation to the hospital.

Coupons are available from the Office of Campus Activities on the second floor of the J.W. Jones Student Union.

Founded in 1998, Up 'Til Dawn has grown into a nationwide philanthropy with nearly 200 participating colleges and universities. The campaign consists of a variety of fundraising efforts held during the fall and spring and culminates with all-night celebrations at each institution.

Last year, Northwest students raised more than $50,000 for St. Jude, a major health care and research center for children founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas.

The 2007-'08 drive began with a mass meeting earlier this fall, when more than 500 students wrote 18,600 letters to family members and friends requesting donations, which are mailed directly to the hospital. The effort more than doubled the number of participants and letters mailed during last year’s opening session.
