Museum event focuses on Great Depression

Projects undertaken by Northwest faculty members during the 1930s will be on display Dec. 1-2 at the Nodaway County Historical Society Museum during the society’s annual “Christmas at the Museum” event.

The museum is located at 110 North Walnut in Maryville. “Christmas at the Museum” hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, and 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2.

This year’s holiday exhibit focuses on the Great Depression, a period of extreme economic hardship in the United States that began with the infamous stock market crash of 1929 and lasted until the early days of World War II.

In keeping with the 1930s theme, museum volunteers are decorating a Christmas tree with vintage glass balls, lights and tinsel. There will also be a display of Depression-era toys.

Coffee and homemade cinnamon rolls will be available to all patrons. Items for sale will include cookies and donated Christmas items, a number of which were created by local artisans. Goodwill donations to the society are welcome.
