Dr. Jerry Wilmes                    Jackie Elliott

Jerry Wilmes, M.D., who has served as vice president for student affairs/medical director since summer 2006, announced last week he will return to the full-time position of medical director effective Jan. 2.

Named medical director at Northwest in 1990, Wilmes maintained that role when he assumed the position of vice president.

"Serving as vice president of student affairs has been a wonderful experience," Wilmes said, "but I have decided to go back full-time as medical director. Our enrollment is up. We have several new staff members in the Wellness Center. Our services continue to grow, and I see the need for my giving full attention to our campus medical services.

"Providing quality physical and mental health services, threat assessment, emergency planning and crisis response, employee health, public health and sports medicine are all very important in today’s higher education environment, and I want to continue to make a contribution in those areas."

As an administrative unit, Student Affairs includes residential life, campus activities, campus organizations, student government, international and multicultural programs, volunteerism and judicial affairs. Auxiliary services such as textbook distribution and campus dining are also under the unit.

Northwest President Dean L. Hubbard will recommend to the Board of Regents that Jackie Elliott, Wilmes' highest-ranking staff member, be named vice president for student affairs effective Jan. 2. Elliott joined the University's administrative staff in summer of 2006 as dean of students. Her title was changed that fall to associate vice president for student affairs. Before coming to Northwest, she was dean of student development/chief student affairs officer at Barton County Community College.

"No one is more dedicated to our students than Dr. Jerry Wilmes," said Northwest President Dean L. Hubbard. "I greatly appreciated his stepping up to serve as vice president but fully understand that his major concern is for medical care. He has been instrumental in making Northwest's outstanding medical services program a benchmark for universities across the state and region. His professional affiliations, including his recent appointment to the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Health, are important to his service to our University."

The president added: "We are also fortunate that Jerry’s second-in-command is willing to take on the role of vice president. Jackie is an experienced student affairs professional, and it is with great confidence that I recommend her to the board."
