Missouri Academy of Science, Mathematics and Computing staff played host to a Korean public television news crew Nov. 12-14.
Field coordinator/assistant producer Felix Kwon, reporter Seung-Joon Lee and cameraman Ho Lee were on the Northwest campus to do a series of interviews for an upcoming Korean Broadcasting System report on educational opportunities for academically gifted high school-age students.
KBS, Korea's premier public broadcasting network, plans to air the program in about three weeks. The segment profiling the Missouri Academy, whose entering 2007 "Vanguards" class includes a group of a dozen students from Korea, is expected to last 10 to 12 minutes.
While at Northwest, the KBS team interviewed academy students and staff as well as President Dean L. Hubbard and Provost, Kichoon Yang.
Both Hubbard and Yang have extensive ties to Korea. Yang grew up there, and Hubbard lived in Korea from 1966 to 1971, earning a degree in Korean language from Yonsei University in Seoul.
In 2005, Hubbard became one of the few non-Koreans or non-Korean-Americans to receive the prestigious Global Korea Award from the Council of Korean Studies at Michigan State University.
KBS became interested in the Missouri Academy through the latter's partnership with the Ladera International School of Saipan, which works to recruit young people interested in the academy's two-year residential program of accelerated studies.
KBS cameramen Young Jin Cho accompanied LISS administrators to Northwest earlier this year to shoot footage for the documentary, which primarily focuses on academic options for gifted Korean teens interested in mathematics, science and technology.
The Missouri Academy at Northwest Missouri State University is designed for high school-age (juniors and seniors) students academically talented in science and mathematics. Those who complete the program receive a high school diploma from the academy and an associate of science degree from Northwest.
