Northwest's Encore performing arts series begins its 2007-'08 season with "War Bonds: The Songs and Letters of World War II." Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, in the Performing Arts Center on campus.
"War Bonds" is a musical journey through the epic 20th century conflict that reshaped the world. Described as a "living history cabaret," the production is interspersed with personal letters written on the battlefield and headline news of the day.
The production features the real stories of veterans and many songs from a time when blackouts and rationing were part of daily life, when "Rosie the riveter" discovered she could take care of herself, and when African-Americans, discriminated against at home, became war heroes overseas.
Most touching, perhaps, is the show's evocation of the war's darkest horrors in juxtaposition with the light-hearted popular tunes of the time.
Musical Director Julie Florin's score of 22 familiar melodies creates a feast of nostalgia for audience members old enough to remember the war years while delivering a memorable history lesson to those belonging to subsequent generations.
