Bailey Asher
Bailey Asher, a junior public relations major at Northwest, recently won the writing competition at the Public Relations Student Society of America Day in Kansas City.
Asher, who received a $300 scholarship, is the daughter of Donnie and Brenda Asher of Brookfield.
The contest required participants to write a press release, media pitch and "new-media" piece about a hypothetical case in which campus security guards were to be armed with handguns. Students crafted their messages from the standpoint of a fictional campus organization.
PRSSA Day is an event designed to give area college students with an interest in public relations an opportunity to network with professionals in the field. Asher was one of ten Northwest students who attended the workshop with Dr. John Fisher, assistant professor of communication.
Currently vice president of membership development for Northwest's PRSSA chapter, Asher will serve as chapter president next year. She plans to graduate in spring 2009 and pursue a career as an event planner.
Northwest sophomore Julie Ray, Concordia, placed second in the competition, and Northwest junior Tiffany Hunter, Kansas City, placed third. Ray received a $150 scholarship, and Hunter received a $50 scholarship. Both are majoring in public relations.
