Law enforcement officers are continuing their investigation into a shots-fired incident that took place on the Northwest Missouri State University campus shortly before midnight Saturday, Oct. 27, when a firearm was discharged outside a conference and meeting facility.
The Nodaway County Prosecutor's Office today (Tuesday, Oct. 30) issued a press release to "clarify a misconception among members of the media" regarding the arrest by the Northwest Office of Campus Safety of a "person of interest."
According to Prosecutor David A. Baird's release, law enforcement officers were able to identify and contact a "person of interest" developed from witnesses at the scene where the shots were fired. However, investigation by Campus Safety and Missouri State Highway Patrol officers established that the "person of interest" did not commit the offense.
During the course of the investigation, officers became aware that the individual was wanted on an outstanding warrant from Lafayette County, Mo., with regard to unrelated charges. The individual was arrested, and Lafayette County authorities were notified. However, the investigation has established that the individual was not involved in the firing of the shots on the Northwest campus.
According to Baird, meetings between law enforcement personnel and his office are continuing as the investigation proceeds. When the investigation is concluded, and a potential defendant is identified, the reports will be forwarded to Baird's office for his review, the release stated.
