Kaley Johnson, a 21-year-old junior business management major from Rock Port, recently received a $1,000 Native American Scholarship from Northwest Missouri State University.
The scholarship was presented at the fourth annual Northwest Powwow, which took place Oct 20.
Johnson is the daughter of elementary teacher Pamela Harrington of Rock Port and Christopher Johnson, the athletics director at Polo (Mo.) High School. Both are Northwest alumni.
A Dean's List student, Johnson is treasurer of the Northwest chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority and a member of the Delta Mu Delta honor society. She is also a registered member of the Cherokee Nation. As the recipient of another scholarship through her tribe, Johnson performs ten hours of community service for a non-profit organization each fall and spring trimester.
Johnson is scheduled to graduate in spring 2009 and plans to pursue a master's degree after receiving her diploma. She wrote in her scholarship application that she might like someday to use her business skills on behalf of the Cherokee Nation.
Northwest's Native American Scholarship is supported by private donations and proceeds from the sale of powwow T-shirts and other items. The scholarship was made possible through a major gift to the Northwest Foundation by alumnus Earl Shelton ('49).
Recipients must demonstrate superior academic performance and a commitment to the preservation and advancement of Native American culture.
