A blast from the brass: Wind Symphony fall concert
The Northwest Wind Symphony will present its annual fall concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, in Charles Johnson Theater. Program highlights for the free, public performance include:
- "Kirkpatrick Fanfare," an Irish-themed piece composed by Andrew Boysen Jr.
for the 1999 dedication of the James C. Kirkpatrick Library at the University of Central Missouri.
- "The Red Machine," written by Peter Graham and commissioned for the London-based Regimental Band of Her Majesty’s Coldstream Guards. Among the band's duties is participation in the famous changing-of-the-guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace, where their precision marching has caused them to be described as "The Red Machine."
- "Konigsmarsch," a Richard Strauss march that premiered in 1907 at a palace concert conducted by the composer. It is characterized by "Romantic forces of rich scoring, rigorous flourishes, and a bold sense of harmonic power."
- Other selections on the fall concert program include "Divertimento for Band" by Vincent Perischetti; "Contri qui, rose" by Morton Lauridsen; and "Danse Diabolique" by Joseph Hellmesburger.
The Northwest Wind Symphony, under the direction of Carl Kling, assistant professor of music and director of bands, is the Department of Music's premiere instrumental ensemble.
Sixty members strong, the ensemble is active in its support of quality music designed for younger players and recently introduced "pops" performances that introduce quality wind music to new audiences.
In late December, the wind symphony will travel to England, along with the Bearcat Marching Band and the Northwest Jazz Ensemble, where it will participate in London's New Year’s Day Parade festivities and perform at a gala concert on Sunday, Dec. 30, in Westminster.
