jazz band low rez

Dr. William Richardson, assistant professor of music, leads the Northwest
Jazz Ensemble during a recent concert. Students from Northwest's
instrumental music program will play jazz and swing standards during
a big band dance gala from 7:30-10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, in the J.W.
Jones Student Union Ballroom.

The Northwest chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi will host a big band dance from 7:30-10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, in the J.W. Jones Student Union Ballroom.

Tickets cost $6 per person and $10 per couple and are on sale now at the Student Services Center on the first floor of the Administration Building (660.562.1212) or from the Department of Music office on the first floor of the Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building (660.562.1315).

Proceeds from the big band gala will help support the Bearcat Marching Band's trip to England where the "Musical Pride" of Northwest is to march in the London New Year's Day Parade, said to be the largest event of its kind in the world.

About 120 student musicians, along with alumni and band boosters, are expected to make the trip to England, which will also include performances by the Northwest Wind Symphony and Northwest Jazz Ensemble at a gala concert in Saint John's, Smith Square.

Dr. Bill Richardson, who heads the University's jazz program, said the Oct. 12 dance will feature a swing and jazz ensemble made up of Northwest students. He emphasized that the event is open to the public in addition students, faculty and staff.

"Jazz is America’s music, and I can think of no better way of spending a Friday evening than dancing, listening and enjoying these really fantastic sounds from the 1940s, '50s and '60s," Richardson said. "The music of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and others is perfect for this event, and it promises to be a real swinging shindig."

Kappa Kappa Psi is a band service fraternity that supports all instrumental ensemble activities at Northwest.
