Bearcat Marching band to present Sunday showcase

bearcat marching band

The Bearcat Marching Band will present its third annual Marching Band Showcase at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, in the Performing Arts Center on the Northwest campus. The concert is free and open to the public.

Carl Kling, director of bands and assistant professor of music, said the concert will feature highlights from the current academic year, including selections played at Bearcats football games during halftime and pre-game performances.

2007-'08 is a special year for the band, which, on Jan. 1, 2008, will participate in the London New Year’s Day Parade, the first-ever international performance by the "Musical Pride" of Northwest.

Nearly 120 students, alumni and band fans are expected to make the trip to England, where the BMB -- along with the Northwest Wind Symphony and Northwest Jazz Ensemble -- will represent the United States as the only college band from this country selected for what is said to be the largest event of its kind in the world.

The Showcase will give local residents a chance to experience the kind of excitement the band is expected to generate during its London performance. Selections will include "Northwest Fanfare," a piece composed to mark the University's 2005 centennial; music by jazz legend Stan Kenton; and arrangements of pop hits by the Tower of Power and Jimmy Buffet.

There will also be featured performances by the Northwest Flags, Bearcat Steppers, the BMB Drumline and twirlers and the Maryville High School Marching Spoofhounds under the direction of Jennifer Kling and Paul Weissenborn. The Spoofhounds will perform their 2007 festival/competition show "Selections from West Side Story."

Band fans are encouraged to support the University's band program, including the London New Year's Day Parade project, through donations to the Northwest Foundation. Donations are tax deductible and can be earmarked for the support of band activities. Gifts of any size are welcome.
