The Northwest Visiting Artists Series continues Monday, Oct. 8, with a slide show and lecture by sculptor John Richardson, associate professor of sculpture at Wayne State University in Detroit.
The lecture takes place at 7 p.m. in room 244 of the Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building on the Northwest campus. Richardson's work will remain on display in the DeLuce first-floor gallery through Friday, Nov. 2.
A second lecture featuring art historian Dr. Mysoon Rizk will take place the following evening -- 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9 -- also in DeLuce 244.
Richardson, who holds a master's in fine art from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, considers his work to be an examination of the interstices between representation and abstraction linking the practices of painting and sculpture.
A conceptual extension of the relief sculpture tradition, his pieces explore architectural foundations, transportation systems, writing surfaces, projection screens and monitors.
The artist works in a variety of media, including cast and welded metals, rubber, wood and stone and has participated in more than 50 group shows and many solo exhibitions.
Richardson's award-winning work is held in numerous private and public collections, including Xiadu Park in Yanqing, China, and the Open Air Museum of Steel Sculpture in Coalbrookedale, England.
In addition to making art and teaching, Richardson is a frequent juror and conference participant and currently sits on the board of directors of the Mid-America College Art Association (www.macaart.org).
Rizk, an associate professor of art history at the University of Toledo, will talk about her current research project, a book she is writing on the late artist David Wojnarowicz.
Wojnarowicz (1954-1992) was a painter, photographer, writer, filmmaker, performance artist and activist best known as part of the New York City art scene during the 1980s.
The lecture will explore how Wojnarowicz's work has shaped the social legacy of testimony regarding public impact on private experience, especially in relation to AIDS.
Rizk holds a Ph.D. in art history and photography from the University of Illinois.
